Do you want a clean, clear, flawless and glowing skin without loading your skin with chemical-laden skincare products, let me share with you my secret, rightaway!
One-Ingredient, 2-in-1 Cleanser Cum Exfoliater
Gram flour also known as Besan Flour or Chickpea flour or Garbanzo flour is the heroine in my skincare routine as it not only serves as a gentle exfoliater that removes dirt and toxins from deep within but also an effective cleanser which has alkalising properties that lightens and brightens up skin. From centuries ago till even this modern era, it continues to be used to bathe newborns - that should hint why this practice is being continued. It's a really affordable and effective 2-in-1 which is widely available and safe for even extra-sensitive, babies.
Guess what, it is suitable for all skin types too! Indu Ballani, Dermatologist says, “Besan is a great cleanser for oily skin.” It helps to absorb the excess oil from the skin and remove impurities, and yet it doesn't dry out the skin. It keeps the skin supple by regulating moisture.
Benefits of Gram Flour
On top of what I already trumpeted about it above, it is known to fight numerous skin problems, including blemishes, pimples, dark skin, and dull and lifeless skin. Here are some of its extra pluses:
It contains zinc which can fight infections that cause acne.
The fiber stabilizes blood sugar levels in the face, which can cause hormonal imbalances (one of the major causes of breakouts).
Gram flour absorbs excess oil on skin and reduces chances of breakouts.
It is a very mild exfoliator and helps in keeping your skin healthy from day to day.
People use gram four as base for tons of skin treatments and it has been a traditional face treatment for hundreds of years.
How to Use it?
Just take a small amount of the mixture and dampen with water to form a paste, wash your face with it like a regular face wash.
If you have oily skin, for super boosted effects, you can use rose water instead of water to get oil free skin. If you have dry to normal skin, you can use milk or rice water if vegan.
My Personal Experience
Let me be honest. I am totally awed and floored by this flour which has done amazing wonders on my skin. I never knew my skin can become clear even though I can't keep my hands off my face and squeezing pimples. Yes, I am guilty as charged. So even when i eventually get dark pimple marks, thanks to my infamous practices, being consistent in using this flour daily has been able to fade them out really quickly. To get porcelein like skin, use one part chickpea flour and one part bentonite clay/multani mitti/fuller's earth/french green clay etc and use this potent combination. I tried this and I swear by it ;p
If you want to speed it up, you can add tumeric, yogurt and even lemon juice and convert it to a face mask and wash it off after 20 mins. As my girl is allergic to tumeric, i don't dare use it in my home made skincare products. But if you are able to, you can add it for expedited effects. If you are afraid of the yellow staining tumeric has on your skin, add lemon or orange peel powder into your power pack as they reduce the staining effect while boosting vitamin c content. Now how cool is that!
