Simple, the width of the earring post probably is bigger than the hole in the earring back

The Thickness of Earring Post / Gauge Size

The earring stem or post (the part where you insert into your earring hole) has a certain thickness to it. The common size is 1mm while it can be thinner for kids earrings. As you can see from the Wire Gauges Size Chart, the thinnest post width is 0.5mm and thickest usually is 1.6mm while it goes up to 2.5mm for body piercing jewellery.

The Hole Size of Earring Backs

Each earring back has a hole and did you know that even the holes have sizes? Oh yes, it does. It ranges from 0.4mm to 1mm and there is even adjustable earring backs that is able to entertain different post widthss but that is more costly of course.

So why does it fall off?

Its because for the earring back to grip onto the earring post, there has to be some fit or tightness. That is why the earring hole has to be equal or less than the width of the earring post. If not, hole is bigger than the thickness of the earring post and earring will eventually fall off.

For eg, for a earring post of 0.5mm thickness, you can use earring back with hole size 0.4mm. For a earring post of 1.6mm thickness, you can still use earring back with hole size 1mm - just that it will be quite tight (its a good problem to have isn't it? haha)

So how can I measure your earring post thickness and earring hole size you may ask. I actually found a solution for the former. You can print out this pdf and check the post's width under 'Gauge Sizes' for yourself. However for the earring back's hole size, it usually is given by the manufacturer. If you feel its loose, just purchase the earring backs from us since you will have the earring post thickness now ;)
